I went running at a local college track Monday. I wanted to run somewhere flat to see how it would feel on my heel. The first two miles went great. I was taking it easy being out in the heat and humidity. The third mile, I was going really slow. My back started to bother me and my right knee hurt. A while after those two pains started, my heel started to hurt. I stopped to walk. It was at this time I looked down at my hands. They were swollen. I had no idea what was going on. It was painful to bend my fingers. I couldn't get my rings off. It was weird. I picked up a water bottle and continued walking with it. I finished my five miles and my hands were still swollen.
Apparently this is common. I was relieved to find out that it happens to other runners as well.
