NCAA Cross Country Championships

The NCAA Cross Country Championships took place Saturday at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terra Haute, Indiana.

Michigan State Spartans won the women's championship with 85 points by placing four runners in the top 21. Iowa State finished second (147), New Mexico (188), Georgetown (189) and Arkansas rounded out the top 5 with (209) points. Other Big Ten teams participated as well. Wisconsin Badgers placed 10th with 382 points, Michigan was 18th (474) and Ohio State was 26th with 577.

Winning the individual title was Kate Avery from Iona in 19:31.6. Wisconsin's Sarah Disanza was second in 19:39.9. Leading the way for the Spartans was Rachele Schulist (4th - 19:54.3), Lindsay Clark (11th - 20:16.0), Leah O' Connor (17th - 20:20.8) and Julia Otwell (21st - 20:29.5).

Michigan's first runner was Brook Handler (89th - 21:08.8).

Colorado
Buffaloes won their second straight NCAA championship with 65 points over second place Stanford with 98 points. Portland finished third with 175, Northern Arizona was fourth (188) and Syracuse was fifth with 206. The Big Ten had many teams compete: Wisconsin finished 10th (335), Michigan 11th (365) and Indiana 15th (416).

Winning the individual title was Edward Cheserek from Oregon in 30:19.4. Wisconsin's Malachy Schroblilgen was 10th in 30:32.6 and Michigan's Mason Ferlic was 13th in 30:37.1.

NCAA Grand Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships

The NCAA Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships took place Saturday at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin.

In the women's race (6,000 meters), Michigan State's Leah O'Connor and Rachele Schulist went 1-2 to help lead the Spartans to the win. O'Connor and Schulist both finished the race in 19:45, but O'Connor was the individual champion. Michigan's Brook Handler was the top finisher for the Wolverines, placing seventh in 20:08. Finishing second for Michigan was Megan Weschler in 22nd place in 20:40. Michigan's top two runners, Erin Finn and Shannon Osika, did not run in the regional championship.

Michigan State won the regional with 28 points, Wisconsin was second (82), Toledo third (133), Michigan fourth (137) and Ohio State rounded out the top five with 155 points.

Michigan women's cross country team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships on November 22 at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, IN. A live webcast of the championships will start broadcasting at noon (ET) on NCAA. com.

The Wisconsin Badgers men's cross country team won the overall title Saturday at home. The Badgers scored 61 points to win the meet on the 10,000 meter course. Coming in second was Michigan State with 82 points, Michigan was third with 94, Indiana was fourth (126) and Eastern Michigan fifth with 164 points.

Winning the individual title was John Mascari from Indiana State in 30:07. Wisconsin's Malachy Schrobilgen finished in 20:10. Michigan had two runners in the top 10, Mason Ferlic was seventh in 30:25 and Ben Flanagan was 10th in 30:31.

The Michigan men's cross country team also earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships this Saturday. The men's race starts at 1 p.m. ET.
