CPR Class

I took a CPR/First Aid class last Friday because it was required for my job.

The week before the class, we were given books to take home and read. I read four chapters a day until I finished it. About a month ago, one of my bosses asked the employees if they needed to take the full course or just a refresher. I took a CPR class back in 2012, so I said I just needed the refresher course. After I sent that email, I was taking to my boss. He mentioned First Aid. I told him that my CPR class didn't go over First Aid. I decided just to take the full course.

I did find out that in taking the full course, that it was good for two years. Now I'm good until 2016. The full class went over CPR, how to help a chocking victim and a bunch of first aid techniques. Since there weren't too many of us in the full course, we all got to practice CPR on our own mannequins. All of our mannequins had a face shield that had a bag in the chest area. When we would give rescue breaths, the bag in the chest area would inflate. We also learned how to use the AED (automated external defibrillator). It was pretty easy to use and it actually told you what to do.

The gain certification, we had to demonstrate CPR. The nurse leading the class gave all of us students a scenario and we had to react. She watched us all, said we did a good job and we passed. Now I'm CPR certified for two more years. It is a good skill to have. You never know if and when you'll have to use it.

Michigan vs Michigan State

USA TODAY/Dave Weaver
I finished watching a documentary Saturday night around 7:20 p.m. and I turned it to ESPN. The Michigan vs Michigan State men's basketball game had already started. I wasn't sure I wanted to watch it because I thought Michigan would lose. What a fan I am. Thinking that one of my favorite teams will lose. That is why I have a few favorite teams, like Duke. #GoDuke

Michigan was trailing Michigan State at halftime, 36-30. That is when I picked up a few magazines and started reading them. The game was on in the background and I really wasn't paying attention. In the second half, Michigan was able to pull closer to Michigan State and eventually took the lead.

The final minute of the game dragged on for minutes. Michigan would inbound the ball and Michigan State would foul. Michigan would shoot free throws and make some of them. Michigan State would get the ball, drive down court and make a basket. Repeat the process again, several times.

The game finally ended and No. 21 Michigan defeated No. 3 Michigan State 80-75 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. Michigan has now won nine straight games. The past three games have been over top-10 ranked opponents. Leading the way for Michigan was Derrick Walton, Jr. and Nik Stauskas with 19 points each. Caris LeVert chipped in with 17 points.

Michigan's next game is this Thursday at 9 p.m. EST against Purdue at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. Duke plays tonight against Pitt at 7 p.m. in Pittsburgh. It will be broadcast on ESPN. #GoDuke

The final two

Getty Images/Kevin C. Cox
The final two football teams standing are the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. They will face each other in the Super Bowl on February 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

To reach the Super Bowl, Denver Broncos defeated the New England Patriots 26-16 in the AFC Championship and the Seattle Seahawks beat San Francisco 49ers 23-17 in the NFC Championship on Sunday.

Now that the teams are set, I want Denver to win the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning has returned from neck surgery and has had the best season of his career. Manning is a classy player and person. Manning is 37 and is
playing his 16th season in the NFL. He won't be in the league that much longer. Peyton could go out on top with a Super Bowl victory. I say that would be a perfect way to close out a wonderful career, if he plans to retire.

Pink Zone 2 Mile

My race on Saturday was supposed to be a 5K outside. The race director emailed all of the runners on Friday saying that with the cold weather, wind chills and street conditions that the race would be held on the indoor track at the college. With the race being run inside, it also cut to two miles.

I lined up at the start line behind the fast guys, the college men's track team and women's track teams. Just before the gun went off, the women's track team moved behind the ladies actually running the race. When they did that, I figured that they were just running a workout.

When the gun went off, the track was jammed with people. The men's track team was running slowly and I was zig and zagging around them to find an open lane. After passing the track team, I noticed that I was the front female. We were told before the race to try to keep track of our own laps. The only people that laps would be counted for were the leading men.

Every time I crossed the finish line, I would repeat the lap I was running in my head. I thought I was doing a good job. At the mile marker, I was running 7:50. I just wanted to keep that pace going. I was never passed by another female, but I was lapped many time by the fast guys.

With four laps to run, the race director asked how many more I had. I held up four fingers. And with that I had someone counting laps for me. Too bad it couldn't have been earlier in the race. After I finished those four laps, I looked at my watch. It read 15:26. I thought I must have miscounted a lap. I have never run two miles that fast before so that I why I was questioning the time. The second place female was a few laps behind me. If I did miss a lap, she still wouldn't have finished in front of me to win. Just to make myself feel better, I ran a couple of laps after the race to make sure I ran the full two miles.

The race results were read. I was thrilled to hear my name said after Overall Women's winner. That is the first time that I have ever won a race. I was happy to have won. I just wish I know if I ran all of my laps or not. If this happens another time, I will have to keep better track of my laps.

Ranch with Bacon Mac & Cheese

Campbellskitchen.com
I saw this recipe and decided that I need to make it this weekend. It looks very tasty and very easy to make. The best thing about it is that it only requires four ingredients.

Ranch with Bacon Mac & Cheese
from Campbell's Kitchen

Ingredients
- 1/2 of a 1-pound package of penne pasta, cooked and drained
- 1 jar (14.5 ounces) Prego Flavored with Savory Bacon Alfredo Sauce

- 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese

Instructions
- Heat the oven to 350°F
- Stir the pasta, sauce, dressing mix and half the cheese into a bowl. Spoon the pasta into an 8x8x2-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese
- Bake for 30 minutes or until the pasta is hot and bubbling

Racing season

My 2014 racing season starts Saturday. I will be wearing my Oiselle singlet for the 2nd Annual Pink Zone 5K run at Adrian College. All race proceeds will benefit the Hickman Cancer Center in Tecumseh, MI.

My last race of 2013 was in early November. I'm ready to represent a great company, Oiselle, and get this season going.

NFL playoffs

Associated Press/Jack Dempsey
This past weekend in the National Football League, four games were played. The teams that won will play in the American Football Conference and National Football Conference championship this coming Sunday. The first game of the day will be the New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos at 3 p.m. EST on CBS and San Francisco 49ers play Seattle Seahawks at 6:30 p.m. EST on FOX.

nfl.com
Who I would love to see play each other in the Super Bowl on February 2 is Denver Broncos vs Seattle Seahawks. The reason I like Denver is because of Peyton Manning. He is a tremendous quarterback and I have liked him since he started playing for the Indianapolis Colts. The reason I like Seattle is bit superficial. I love their team colors. Who doesn't love bright green, blue and silver? I do wish that Seattle would alter their logo. The Seahawk could look cooler. The logo has changed just three times since the 1970s. This alternate logo is pretty neat. They should use it. Look at the mean face and claws of the swooping seahawk. It's just awesome.

New Year's goals

Usually I set goals for the coming new year. I didn't this year.

It seems like for the past couple of years, my New Year's goals have been the same. No matter how many times I can set them, I don't complete them.

One of my goals is to always lose weight. All of 2013 and the start of 2014, my weight has stayed about the same. It has fluctuated  about five pounds either way. I would love to lose 10 pounds and keep it off for good. As long as I don't tip the scale in the wrong direction constantly, I think I'm doing alright.

My second goal is to continue running. I didn't set a mileage goal for 2013 and I don't plan on setting one for 2014. Things happen like injuries, travel or treadmills need repair. I was pleased to have run over 5000 for the third year. It would be great to do that again, but if it doesn't happen, I can't get upset. As long as I run, I will be happy.

This last goal is always on my list: shoot more photos for myself. Since I was laid off of my full-time photography job back in September, I haven't had the motivation to take photos of my interests. My current job has nothing to do with photography. Once I complete my day and go home, I'm tired. The last thing I want to do is leave the house to take photographs. I need to find some time for myself, take my camera out and photograph life around me. I really do miss photography. If I can make time for running everyday, I can make time for photography.
