EMU XC Celebration

The University of Michigan men's and women's cross country teams open their 2015 season at the Eastern Michigan University Celebration in Ypsilanti, Michigan at Eagle Crest Golf Course. Michigan's Mason Ferlic and Erin Finn were the overall winners. Ferlic won the 5000 meter race in 14:56.1 and Finn set an unofficial record winning in 16:54.9. The meet was a non-scoring event.

Michigan's men's team runs again on September 11 at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational i State College, Pennsylvania and the women run again on September 19 at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tennessee.

A highlight of the day was when I tweeted that Erin Finn walked by me but I was too shy to say hello. Finn favored that tweet a short time later. When the women's teams were doing their final run outs prior to the race, Finn and I saw each other and waved. Technology is neat.

Hudson Booster XC Open 5K

I ran the Hudson Booster XC Open 5K Saturday. It was warm and sunny, but not humid. The course is the Hudson High School cross country course. It has many hills and is run over grass, dirt and sand.

When the race started, it felt like I was going slow. Running into the woods for the first time, I started catching up with others and passing them. Back in the woods is a downhill and a big sandy uphill. I did catch and pass a girl after reaching the top of the hill. Once we ran out of the woods, the course was flat for a bit. I told myself to go faster while it was so flat. I could actually feel myself doing that.

During the second mile, I caught up to a big group of girl high school cross country runners. They were walking, so I was able to pass all of them. Ahead of the cross country girls was a group of women runners around my age. I was disappointed I was never able to gain on them.

I was proud of how I finished the race. While I was running to the finish, a few people were cheering for me. Most the girl behind me was getting more cheers. I don't know how close she was, but I didn't want her to pass me. I ran as hard as I could to the finish line. I crossed the line in 29:13, which was eight seconds faster than last year. I did place third in my age group.

I have one more cross country race next week. This course is tough too. Can't wait to tackle it.

The fall sports season for the University of Michigan started on Friday. The women's cross country team participated in the Michigan Open at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter.

Michigan's Shannon Osika won the race by inches over teammate Erin Finn. Osika and Finn both finished with the time of 17:01.5. Brook Handler was third in 17:35.8. Taylor Pogue was fourth (17:45.4) and Anna Pasternak rounded out the top five in 17:51.9.

According to mgoblue.com: "Finn, Osika, Handler and Pogue led the group from the gun and helped pace a group of Wolverines that remained tightly knit through the first mile. Over the second mile, Finn and Osika spread things out and with about 500 meters to go, the two were deadlocked. Both finished strong over the final stretch, with Oiska earning the win by the slimmest of margins."

The Wolverines will be back in action at the Black and Gold Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa on September 20.

Michigan Wolverines football team opened their season Saturday against Appalachian State. This was not a repeat of 2007 when Appalachian State defeated the Wolverines. The Wolverines beat the Mountaineers 52-14. Michigan's quarterback Devin Gardner and wide receiver Devin Funchess hooked up for three touchdowns before half time. Tailbacks Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith had a good day as well. Green rushed for 170 yards and Smith had 115 yards.

Michigan will travel to South Bend, Indiana next week to take on Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC.

Panther XC Open 5K

I ran the Panther XC Open 5K Saturday in Addison, MI. It was raining, but also sunny. The rain started off cool. When the race started, the rain turned warm, the temperature went up and it was humid. The course was changed from year's past. The start and finish of the race was moved to the football field. Previously, we started in a grass field outside of the football field. I did like the change. When the school hosts cross country events, people can watch from the stands and have a better view of runners on the course.

I'm trying something new this year. Last year before all races, I would run anywhere from 3-10 miles. This year, I'm not running before races. When the race started, my legs felt dead. It doesn't seem like they would because I'm not running before races. I only ran 6.5 miles on Friday morning. For the first mile, I stayed behind a guy. He ended up pulling away from me when we ran up a large hill. For most of the race, I ran alone.

There were no mile markers on the course, so I didn't even look at my watch. I tried to keep a steady pace. Some of the footing on the course was difficult. Even though there were no markers, what I knew was the second mile, we had to run through a field. There were holes all over. I actually had to slow down. Even though I was wearing ankle braces, I still didn't want to stick my foot in a hole and twist my ankles. In this field, I also caught up to a guy who was walking. I heard him talking after the race. He said that he hadn't run in two months. I ended up passing him. Shortly after the pass, he started running again and passed me. I really wanted to keep up with him, but my legs weren't feeling it.

The course was run on grass, dirt trails and an open field. I'm always slower on cross country courses, but I do like the variety. I finished the race in 30:55. I actually stopped my watch at 30:51. Usually the clock is next to the finish line. This time the end of the chute was the finish line. So I stopped running when I passed the clock. A helper said to keep going because I hadn't reach the line yet. So I just tacked on a few more seconds. After I finished, the workers ended up moving the flags that directed running into the chute. The flag lines were behind the finish line and others didn't make the mistake I did.

I was the fourth overall female and was first in my age group. I did finish this race about two minutes slower then last year. I don't think my experiment of not running before races is helping me. I always feel so sluggish. I will be running another 5K on a cross country course next week. I might have to run some easy miles before the start.
