The Vampire Diaries

A couple of months ago, I added The Vampire Diaries to my Netflix queue. I had no idea what the show was about. I figured since I liked the Twilight series and True Blood, I would give The Vampire Diaries a whirl.

I received Disc 1 of The Vampire Diaries in the mail on Friday. I watched the first five episodes in two sittings. I was stuck on my couch for a good chunk of the weekend. I'm already watching Disc 3 episodes. This show is not the same as Twilight or True Blood, which is good. Two brothers who are vampires return to their hometown. The brothers, Stefan and Damon, are obsessed with the same girl, Elena, because she looks like a girl they both loved in the past, Katherine.

I'm already obsessed with this show. I've been watching the episodes non-stop and I bought The Vampire Diaries books by L.J. Smith. I'm sure I'll own the DVD series soon. The Vampire Diaries is a good show. Its not as hardcore as one of my other favorite shows, True Blood, but it is worth checking out.

One year ago

So much has changed in one year. Last year at this time, I was overweight. I didn't think that there was anything I could do about it. I wanted to lose weight, but I didn't know how.

The second week of January 2010, I was looking at Christmas photos. It was then I saw what I really looked like. I didn't like what I was seeing. It was then I decided that I had to lose weight. No more wishing that I could. It was then I took control of my eating habits and changed my running routine. I didn't know how much I would loose. I know I just had to do it.

Almost a year later, I have lost 80 pounds. Everyday I try to watch what I eat. Sometimes I do go overboard and gain a couple of pounds. When I do gain a few extra pounds, I know that over the following days, I really have to watch what I eat. I do have a goal of losing another 8 pounds. In the new year, I'm really going to focus on that goal. I'm going to go back to how I lost my weight. Really following portion control. I want those last 8 pounds gone. If all goes well, by the end of January they will be gone.

AATC Mini Meet

I participated in the Ann Arbor Track Club's Winter Mini Meet Tuesday evening at the University of Michigan Indoor Track Building. The events contested were the 1 mile, 400m, 800m, 60m, 3200m, 200m plus a track hexathon, which required runners to compete in each of the the six events. Participants could run in as many events as they wanted. I ran all of the events: 1 mile, 400m, 800m, 60m, 3200m and the 200m.

I had a great time. Most of my times were consistent with what I ran in high school. My mile time was 7:35. My best time in high school was 7:29. I accidentally ran an extra lap in the 3200m and finished 17:26. My estimated finishing time probably was 16:26. I think my best in high school was right around 16:30. My 400m time was slower then high school. My best in high school was 1:23. Last night I ran a 1:45.

I'm glad I joined the Ann Arbor Track Club. So many nice runners. Everyone cheered and clapped for all runners. Just a great environment to improve your running. My goal is to my speed and beat all of the times from Tuesday's mini meet during the summer mini-meet.

Earhart's bone?

If you are a reader of my blog, you know I'm very interested in Amelia Earhart. Late last week, news reports were saying that a bone fragment collected from Nikumaroro, a remote tropical island, could be Earhart's or a turtle's. I'm hoping the bone is Earhart's. She disappeared while en route to Howland Island 73 years ago, but I would like to know what happened to her and her navigator, Fred Noonan.

New Memberships

I'm proud to say that I am a member of the Ann Arbor Track Club and the USATF.

This past Tuesday, I drove to Ann Arbor to the University of Michigan Indoor track building to participate in a Tuesday evening workout. I can say it really was a workout. I slowly ran a mile for a warm up. After listening to announcements and all of the new runners telling everyone our names, it was time to run intervals. I went into the workout with an open mind. I haven't run intervals since high school track. I do know that I need to run them because my goal is to improve the last half of my races. We were told that the workout for the evening was an 800m at tempo, 400m at mile pace, 200m all out followed by a 400m jog three times.

We the clock started, I was getting passed by so many runners. It didn't bother me. There was no need to keep up with them. I needed to run the intervals at my pace. The guy leading the workouts didn't keep splits or times, so I really don't know how I ran. I know that I did work hard because at the end of the workout, my quads were very sore. They kicked my butt. But I think that is really what I need. When I do my everyday runs, I do work on speed a bit. But doing this intervals with the AATC a couple times a month will help me get faster.

Next Tuesday the AATC is having its annual Mini Meet. The mini meet has six events. People can run them all or whatever they want. The order of the meet is 1 mile; 400m, 800m, 60m, 3200m and a 200m. I want to run them all. I want to compare my winter mini meet times with the mini meet held in the summer. I want to know if I am getting faster. A longtime member came up to me after the workout was over and said, "At the mini meet, you'll find out how out of shape you really are." I know that I'm not out of shape, long distance wise. But for shorter races I know I am. My goal for 2011 is to really improve my speed and of course lower all my times in all races.

Besides the AATC, I joined the USATF the same week. I really wanted to join because as a member of the USATF, I can run in the USATF Michigan Open/Masters Cross Country Championships. I want to represent my club at a state meet. I think it would be really fun to run against other USATF members in a state meet on a cross country course. There are other benefits to joining the USATF; discount subscriptions to magazines, discounts of USATF merchandise (I'm really liking that), discounts to hotels, car rentals and products.

I'm really looking forward to 2011 and the new adventures I will take with the AATC and the USATF.

These elite runners took part in an autograph session at the Nike Cross Nationals. Some of them were named captains of the different divisions of runners competing at the NXN. I was really excited to meet all of the female runners. Don't get me wrong, I was very excited to meet the guys also. It was so neat to be standing across a table talking to women who I've watched compete for years. It was a wonderful experience that I'll never forget.

Nike Cross Nationals

I had so much fun in Oregon. Thank you Nike and Eastbay! If I never entered the contest, who knows if I would have ever traveled to Oregon.

The weather was nice. It was in the high 40s and low 50s. The day of the Nike Cross Nationals, it was very breezy. The wind made it a bit chilly. The course was very muddy. As soon as my shoes and socks got wet, I was instantly cold. I'm sure the runners felt worse then I did. They had to run through a mud pit.

My husband and I arrived in Portland on Thursday. Nike employees met us and we were bused to our hotel, along with the runners. Once getting to the hotel, we needed to get credentials. Everyone involved with Nike Cross Nationals received credentials. They were to worn at all times at Nike World Headquarters, so they knew we who everyone was. Once we received our credentials, we finally got to go to our rooms, drop off our luggage and head to Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton.

The buses dropped everyone off at Nike. Once inside, we met with Nike employee Abby Samuelson. I found out Friday that Abby's mom is Joan Benoit Samuelson. How awesome is that? Abby was the leader of the Eastbay winners. Abby took us for a tour around the Nike World Headquarters. My favorite building was the Steve Prefontaine building. The building had a huge statue of Steve and many items of his from his running days. I didn't bring along my camera the first day on campus. At least I will always have the memory of the building.
All of the runners and the Eastbay winners had dinner in the Mia Hamm cafe and attended the Opening Ceremonies for the Nike Cross Nationals. At the Opening Ceremonies, it was announced that the teams would be captained by elite runners. I was so excited to see them in person. The elite athlete captains were: Galen Rupp, Amy Begley, Chris Solinski, Dathan Ritzenhein, Simon Bairu, Alan Webb, Andrew Wheating, Anna (Willard) Pierce, Evan Jager Matt Tegenkamp, Lisa Koll, Lauren Fleshman and Shalane Flanagan.

On Friday, my husband and I went to Portland. We walked around downtown, went shopping and had lunch. Everyone that we passed was wearing either an Oregon or Oregon State shirt. So much football pride in the state of Oregon. Later I went back to Nike to attend the elite runners autograph session. I was so excited to actually talk to the runners. I'm sure they don't remember me, but I will always remember that. I took all of the runners photos, I'll be posting them throughout the week.

Abby picked up two other Eastbay winners and myself and drove us to Portland Meadows. Portland Meadows was the host for the Nike Cross Nationals. I took photos of the runners the entire day. I tried to focus on the feature photos. Usually when I shoot cross country, I just shoot the race. On Saturday, I shot pre-race and post-race photos also. We the course being all muddy and wet, it was hard to get around. I could only hit a couple of spots before the runners finished. I didn't want to run and get myself muddy. The level of competition was awesome. I will have to find the video online to race the entire boys and girls national championship races.

Later that night, Abby set up something really nice for us. Abby got us in to shop at the Nike Employee Store. That was the best experience ever! So many Nike products at discounted rates. I will always be so grateful to Abby for getting us in the store. I bought a new pair of shoes, wind pants, shorts and running tops. My husband and I spent over an hour in the store. I could have shopped there all night. So many items to choose from. While we were paying for our items, Shalane Flanagan was in the next lane over. I said to my husband that Shalane, who finished second at the New York City Marathon, was in the next lane. He told me to go over and say hello. I told him I didn't want to be a stalker, so I stayed where I was. I was hoping we would make eye contact so I could wave and say Hi, but it never happened.

I had a wonderful time at the Nike Cross Nationals. I hope I can attend them again in the future. If I can't, I know I will be watching the races online.
